Ruth Yirgalem to Represent Ethiopia at the 73rd Miss World Pageant in Vietnam

​#fastmereja I The Ministry of Culture and Sports, in collaboration with "Miss World Ethiopia," has officially introduced Ruth Yirgalem as the country's representative for the upcoming 73rd Miss World competition in Vietnam. Ruth emerged victorious from a pool of thousands of contestants across Ethiopia, securing her spot among the 130 global participants.

​For the first time, Ethiopia’s participation carries high-level government endorsement. State Minister for Culture and Sports, Nebiyu Baye, emphasized that the pageant serves as a vital diplomatic platform to promote Ethiopia’s culture, tourism, and flagship projects to the international community.

Before heading to Vietnam, Ruth will undergo three months of intensive training in public speaking and international communications. She is also scheduled to visit national parks and the GERD to gather materials for her role as a cultural ambassador. Ethiopia looks forward to a historic performance at the global finale.

ጥናቱ ከተካሄደባቸው ስድስት የአፍሪካ ከተሞች (ናይሮቢ፣ ዳሬሰላም፣ ሉሳካ፣ ኪጋሊ እና ያውንዴ) መካከል አዲስ አበባ የተሻለ አፈፃፀም በማስመዝገብ ቀዳሚ መሆን ችላለች። በተለይም የገቢ እና የፋይናንስ ሀብት አስተዳደርን በማዘመን ረገድ ከተማችን የጀመረችው ሪፎርም ውጤታማና ለአፍሪካ ከተሞች አርአያ መሆኑን የጥናቱ ግኝት አመላክቷል።

Addis Ababa has once again reaffirmed its continental leadership by serving as a platform for mutual learning among our African brothers and sisters.

Today, in our continental capital, we are hosting a productive peer-to-peer learning forum with mayors and regional administrators from various African cities.

According to an in-depth survey conducted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on the financial management performance of African cities, Addis Ababa was selected to share its experience after achieving outstanding results in five of the six key metrics evaluated.
Among the six African cities surveyed (Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Lusaka, Kigali, and Yaoundé), Addis Ababa emerged as the top performer. The findings specifically highlighted that the reforms our city initiated in modernizing revenue and financial resource management are both effective and serve as a blueprint for other African cities.

This success is a testament to the effectiveness of our reform journey, through which we have allocated 71% of the city’s total revenue to development projects to ensure the sustainable benefit of our citizens.

The visiting mayors and participants will personally tour these reform projects today. Addis Ababa will share its extensive experience in building financial and revenue capacity and translating that capacity into tangible, transformative change.

This forum represents a historic opportunity for us to collectively shape the future of African cities.

Finally, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the UNECA for conducting this study and recognizing our city, as well as to the residents of Addis Ababa and my colleagues, who are the true owners of this achievement.

Moving beyond pitch renovation, the initiative focuses on identifying and supporting promising male and female footballers aged 12 to 15 across the continent, providing structured development and sponsorship until they reach the age of 18. The program is designed to create clear, professional pathways for young players while allowing them to grow and thrive within their home countries.

The launch builds on the strong foundation of the Dream On The Field program, which has already delivered eight renovated football pitches, with seven additional projects currently underway. These efforts align with TECNO’s long-term vision to renovate 100 football pitches across Africa, establishing a sustainable ecosystem that connects grassroots infrastructure with elite player development.

The Future Star of Africa initiative combines CAF’s technical expertise with TECNO’s commitment to empowering young Africans. Talent identification will be conducted through a fair and professional process led by expert scouts, national youth coaches, and sports academics. Players will be evaluated not only on technical skill, but also on mindset, resilience, discipline, and leadership potential, ensuring the development of well-rounded athletes and future role models.

Rare earths & environmental cost

Pakistan is entering a critical phase in its resource development strategy.

Beneath its mountainous terrain lies a vast reserve of rare earth elements (REEs), estimated to be worth between $6 to $8 trillion. These minerals are essential to the global supply chain for technologies such as smartphones, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced defense equipment. Their discovery has generated significant interest from both domestic policymakers and international investors. Yet, as the country races to unlock this potential, it risks plunging headlong into an environmental catastrophe of staggering proportions. This rapid push toward extraction has raised important questions about the adequacy of environmental safeguards and whether current governance systems can manage the long-term impacts of large-scale resource development. Without careful planning and oversight, the benefits of rare earth mining could be overshadowed by lasting ecological and social costs.

Recent geochemical mapping, conducted jointly by the Geological Survey of Pakistan and the China Geological Survey, has revealed extensive concentrations of REEs across nearly 360,000 square kilometers of Pakistani territory. These deposits, primarily found in carbonatite-related formations, represent not just economic opportunity but ecological peril. For every ton of rare earths extracted, the process generates 2,000 tons of toxic waste, including one ton of radioactive residue. This toxic arithmetic is not a footnote; it is the central equation of extraction—one that threatens to poison Pakistan’s soil, water and air for generations. Much of the exploratory work has been described as unscientific, random and insufficient. This knowledge gap means that decisions about extraction are being made without a full understanding of the environmental consequences. Eight strategic sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stretching from Mansehra to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, have been earmarked for exploration. Drilling operations at Mashkichah in District Chagai are already underway, but the environmental implications raise serious concerns about transparency and accountability.

Pakistan’s ecological foundation seems fragile. The country faces one of the world’s most severe water crises, with over 60 percent of Balochistan’s population lacking access to safe drinking water. Groundwater depletion is accelerating and arsenic contamination in aquifers has reached dangerous levels. Rare earth processing, which requires massive volumes of water—up to 500,000 gallons per ton of lithium extracted—will place enormous strain on these already stressed resources. The competition for water between mining operations and local communities will be fierce and, in many cases, devastating. Contaminated aquifers can remain unusable for decades, wiping out agricultural potential in rural areas. The town of Talaap in Balochistan offers a grim preview of what lies ahead. For years, it has supplied water to the Saindak copper-gold project, yet its own residents have seen little benefit. The expansion of rare earth extraction threatens to replicate this pattern across multiple provinces, draining resources while delivering profits elsewhere.

The health consequences of rare earth exposure are equally alarming. REEs are known to cause cancer, cardiovascular damage, respiratory failure and neurological disorders. These elements disrupt fundamental biological processes, affecting multiple organ systems and compromising immune, reproductive and nervous functions. The burden of this environmental violence falls disproportionately on the most vulnerable and those with limited access to healthcare. Compounding these risks is Pakistan’s seismic vulnerability. The 2005 Kashmir earthquake was a stark reminder of the region’s tectonic instability. Balochistan continues to experience regular seismic activity, posing a direct threat to mining infrastructure. Rare earth extraction requires massive tailings dams to store radioactive waste and toxic chemicals. These structures, even under ideal conditions, are prone to failure.

Pakistan’s mineral wealth is undeniable. It holds the world’s fifth-largest copper-gold reserves, the second-largest coal and salt reserves and 92 discovered minerals in total. Yet the sector contributes less than 2 percent to the national GDP. This extraction-without-development model ensures that Pakistan captures minimal value from its resources while bearing the full brunt of environmental and social costs. The Saindak mine generated $2 billion between 2002 and 2017, yet Balochistan remains the poorest province. Proposed contracts for rare earth projects allocate just 10 percent equity to local communities, while foreign partners claim up to 70 percent. This is neo-colonial resource extraction, refined and repackaged for the 21st century. External geopolitical pressure further affects Pakistan’s mineral policy. In April 2025, U.S. State Department official Eric Meyer visited Islamabad just before the rushed passage of the Balochistan Mines Act. The legislation, which centralized control over provincial minerals, was suspended after widespread protests.

The risks Pakistan faces from rare earth mining are not abstract; they are immediate, measurable and potentially irreversible. If extraction proceeds without proper safeguards, the country could face widespread contamination of its water sources, accumulation of radioactive waste and loss of arable land. These impacts won’t disappear when the mining ends; they will linger for decades, affecting public health, agriculture and access to clean water. Pakistan must make a critical decision: whether to pursue mineral wealth at any cost or to develop policies that balance economic opportunity with environmental protection and community welfare. The country’s long-term stability depends on whether it can move beyond short-term profits and invest in sustainable practices and scientific oversight. This isn’t just about reputation; it’s about resilience.

#ethiopia | ወይዘሮ ቡክሪ ይርጉ ከአባቷ ከአቶ ይርጉ ደጋጋ እና ከእናቷ ከወይዘሮ አየለች በዳኔ በሐረር ከፍለ ሀገር ግሪ ቆጨርበመባል በሚታወቀው ከተማ July 1 ቀን 1962 በአውሮፓ ዘመን አቆጣጠር ዓ.ም ተወለደች። ፊደል ቆጥራ ዳዊት ደግማ በፍሬ ሕይወት አንደኛ ደረጃ ት/ቤት የአንደኛ ደረጃ ትምህርቷን አጠናቃ የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርቷን በአዲስ አበባ ዳግማዊ ምንልከ ሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት አጠናቃለች። በወጣትነት ዕድሜዋ ታላቅ ወንድሟ, አቶ ደጀን ይርጉ ድንገተኛ አደጋ ደርሶበት ሕይወቱን ለማትረፍ ወደ ኬንያ ተሰዳ በእግዚአብሔር እርዳታ ፈረንሳይ ገብታ ሕይወቱን አትርፋለች፡፡ ከፍተኛ ፍቅር ያላትን የምግብ አሰራር ትምህርት ተምራ በሼፍነት ማዕረግ በቅታለች። ከአቶ ዳንኤል ካሣሁን ጋር በ September 05, 1987 ዓ.ም በፓሪስ ከተማ ትዳር መስርተው በ 1988 ዓ.ም ወደ አሜሪካ በመምጣት የሁለት ሴቶችና የአንድ ዲያቆን በረከት ከእግዚእብሔር አግኝተዋል። በ1989 ዓ.ም የመጀመሪያውን የፈረንሳይ እና የኢትዮጵያ የባህል ምግብ ፒጋል በተሰኘ ምግብ ቤት በሎስ አንጀለስ ከፍተው ቤቱ መስራት የማይችለውን ለፍቶ አዳሪ ሁሉ የእንጀራ ናፍቆቱን አርክተዋል፡፡ በ1994 ዓ.ም ወደ ዳላስ ቴክሳስ በመምጣት PICK AND GO I STAR GROCERYE STAR FOOD RESTAURANT AND CATERING በተሰኙ ድርጅቶች በቅንነትና በፍቅር መላውን የዳላስ ሕዝብን እና ሌሎችም ከፍለ ከተማዎችን አገልግለዋል። በርካታ አመታት ጠንክራ ከሰራች በኋላ በዓለም አቀፍ የገንዘብ አያያዝ ድርጅት (WFG) ከአራት ዓመት በፊት ተካፍላ ያገኘችውን ጥቅም ለወገኖቿ በማካፈል ጠንከራ በመስራት ያገኘችውን ስኬት ለምታገኘው ሁሉ በማስረዳቷ የድርጅቱ ስም ተረስቶ የቡከሪ ኢንሹራስ በመባል በከተማው ውስጥ ሲነገር ያላትን ተጽእኖ ፈጣሪነት ከኦባማ ኬር ተብሎ ከሚጠራው ያልተናነሰ ነበር። ቡከሪ ደግ ሰው፤ ለሰው ሁሉ መልካም ነገር የምትመኝ፤ የሰውን ችግርሁሉ የራሷ ችግር አድርጋ የምትመለከት፤ የተራበን አብልታ፤ የተጠማን አጠትታ፤ የታረዘን አልብሳ፤ የታሰረን ጠይቃ ለብዙ ሰዎች ችግር መፍትሔ የምትሰጥ እመ-መላ ነበረች። የተፈጠረችበትን ዓላማ አውቃ ሩጫዋን ፈጽማ ዘወትርወደምትናፍቀው አምላኳ፤ መልካም ሥራዋን ይዛ ከፊቷ የሎስ አንጀለስ ማርያምን የዳላስ ቅዱስ ሚካኤልን፤ የኢቲሣ ተከለ

ሐይማኖትን አስቀድማ ወደ ፈጣሪዋ በ FEB 18, 2021 ዓ.ም ከንጋቱ በ 6:42am በባለቤቷ፤ በልጆቿ እና በቅርብ ቤተሰቦቿ ተከባ ወደፈጣሪዋ ሄዳለች። እግዚአብሔር በእቅፉ ያኑርልን። አሜን።

Bukri Yirgu

A Blessed Person and a Blessing to Others.

Bukri was the first woman, in many ways than one, including of our community to join, the WORLD FINANCIAL GROUP AND WORLD SYSTEM BUILDER, INC. (WFG/WSB, Inc.). Along with her husband Daniel Kassahun, they worked hard in tandem. As a woman with keen insight, she saw the need for and benefits of financial education which she applied. She became an avid campaigner to educate and invited others to join in the Mission and Vision of the cam-paign. They succeeded in building Team Star. Bukri was a wonderful colleague, a friend and a great leader to all those who followed in her footsteps. She made sure that members bonded not only as colleagues but as friends and members of a larger family-community. She was a blessed person and a blessing to others.

Bukri was a Grand Chef as well as a Financial Advisor. With her God given qualities and the full support of her beloved husband, her wonderful personality, unequalled judgment, talent, generosity, energy, and drive she excelled in both areas, as diverse as they were and served the community well. In recognition of their contribution, and as the successful leaders of Team Star, Bukri and Daniel were awarded by WFG/WSB. Bikri became the first woman of her community in North America to wear the Green Jacket. Yet she always said, "...this is a group achievement, we all earned it, and if I can do it, so can you. "They were all inclusive and hum-ble. The Team Star had a great admiration and respect for them as a couple, achievers, as leaders, and for their humanitarian projects and activities. Bukri played a major part in all of them.

Bukri was principled, generous, compassionate, and a good person to her core. She helped many people in any way she can including her time, energy, and means. She saw the goodness in others irrespective of life's lot. With her upright character and genuine smile, she wel-comed and treated everyone equally with respect. Thus, she became the "special friend" of everyone mentored and guided those who needed it. She was one that everyone would want to have as a friend, a sister, a confidant, and as a mother to the young ones. She was one of a kind who did so much more for others, and God rewarded her for her good deeds.
